History of Best In Show
Interested in how Dog Shows started? These events are commonly known as Best in Show now. Before we get to that though, let me give you a little history on our Relationship with Dogs.
If you’re like me, you probably have a great love and respect for Dogs. I’m not sure if you knew this, but here is an interesting fact. Our common dog friends are descendants of the Gray Wolf. They are a domesticated form of the Gray Wolf.
The word dog is considered to mean the male of a canine species. It is estimated that dogs have been domesticated by humankind for somewhere between 15,000 and 30,000 years. They have been primarily used for tracking, working and hunting and most recently are considered wonderful pets.
Based on current estimates, there are currently 400 million dogs in the world. They come from all varieties and all types. These derivations of the original Gray Wolf have evolved and morphed over time depending on environmental factors, what activities the dogs were engaged in, and the breeding of different varieties together.
As humans we are naturally competitive. As such, we desire to show our dogs off and in some cases have them compete against each other in dog shows. The term Best in Show is a term used in dog shows.
The first official dog show is considered to be a show at Newcastle on Tyne, England in 1859 where owners of pointers and setters got their dogs together to show them off. This started a very popular competition year after year and within 30 years there were more than 200 different shows being held throughout England.
Today there are dog shows all over the world and for all types of dogs. These shows attract dog owners who want to show off their prized pets and achieve, for their pets, the title of Best in Show, which is of course the title given to the top show dog at a specific dog show.
On a personal note I have had numerous dogs in my life. As matter fact we currently have a beautiful brindle half German Shepherd half Lab. We don’t show her for obvious reasons but she is one of the best pets we have ever had. This past year we lost two of our best friends to old age and expect to replace them with new best friends this coming year.
